Graphic Design Trends 2019

design trends 2019

Staying on top of the design trends in 2019 is all about thinking outside the box. Our graphic designer, Lindsey, told us what graphic design trends we can expect to see in 2019. She said to expect a lot of vivid colors, asymmetrical layouts, and bold fonts! These are the top 7 graphic design trends that are predicted to take over in 2019.

Memphis Design

The Memphis Design is making a comeback. This chaotic yet minimalistic movement began back in the early 1980s in Milan with Ettore Sottsass as an answer to the popular reserved style of the time.

This design trend has returned with its bright, clashing colors and atypical doodles, shapes, and strokes. Alternative Art will definitely make you stand out with its randomness and lack of symmetry!

Micro Interactions and Animations

Though it’s the tiniest design trend, micro interactions and animations will be making all the difference in 2019, especially in web design.

They’re tiny, functional animated graphics that support the user by giving visual feedback, displaying changes more clearly, and drawing attention to certain visual elements. From CSS transitions to gifs, micro animations and interactions are little surprises that help to create a moment that is engaging for users.

Complex Gradients

2018 was all about gradients. They are no longer just in the background of images though. In 2019, designers will be taking gradients to a whole new level by incorporating them into designs in new ways.

Complex gradients add depth to illustrations that would normally be flat. Designers are using multiple colored, abstract gradients to create a liquid or fluid effect on their work. This design trend has us excited to see flat images come alive!

Digital Brutalism

Of all the design trends, this one breaks the most design rules we’ve come to know. Digital Brutalism, also known as Brut, is essentially making something look “purposefully ugly” with visual randomness. Yes, you read that correctly…making something ugly on purpose.

Imagine a web page from the late 90s. Now, imagine that a designer took some of those elements, mashed in some modern design elements, and rearranged everything. That is digital brutalism.

Typography Experimentations

Typography is a part of every graphic designer’s life and is becoming a focal point in the design world. It’s the arrangement of a type to make written language legible and appealing. In 2019, we’ll see more experimentations with typography where it’s stretched, rotated, and visually jumping off the page!

From the use of bold fonts to combining unique fonts with a minimalistic design and negative space to make it stand out, typography will be taking over 2019.

3D Elements

Three dimensional, also known as 3D, has been a rising trend over the past few years. In 2019, graphic designers will be giving new dimensions to their work by adding 3D illustrations and abstract 3D shapes.

We will definitely be seeing a lot more monochromatic 3D elements and mixing of 3D with flat illustrations to create interesting compositions.

Experimental Web Layouts

2019 seems to be the year of visual randomness. We’re breaking the grid in 2019 with experimental web layouts by purposely placing objects outside of the typical grid we’re used to seeing on the web.

Another experimental web layout design trend appearing in 2019 is the use of abstract shapes other than the typical squares and rectangles.
